Cal Poly GrC TAGA Team wins three awards!

Congratulations are in order as Cal Poly’s Technical Association of the Graphic Arts (TAGA) Student Chapter’s annual research journal took home the awards of Best in Design Quality, Best in Production Quality, and Best in Digital Enhancement at this year’s national TAGA Conference! The TAGA club spent seven months putting together the journal, designing a layout, and producing it all on printing presses in the Graphic Communication Department. This club truly is an example of Cal Poly’s ‘Learn by Doing’ motto, as students learn how to create the journal concept to production. This year’s journal featured a beautiful magazine-inspired layout, clear coat varnished topographic map details, and interactive augmented reality that brings the cover design to life. Additionally, a die cut slip cover holds and protects the journal. The 2020 TAGA team consisted of Erica Taylor, Aileen Vasquez, Will Olson, Bailey Yuen, Christine Peters, Alice Ish, and Luis Coreas. The team would like to thank their advisor Professor Brian Lawler, as well as the GrC Technician, Dr. Peter Schlosser for all their help completing the journals.

2020 WINNERS – PHOENIX CHALLENGE COLLEGE COMPETITION
Students adapt and impress judges, the industry
and the Phoenix Challenge Foundation
Charlotte, NC. (3 May 2020) – The 2020 Phoenix Challenge College Competition, while adapting to these current uncertain times, was a success on May 2nd. This competition is a fine example of dedication, problem solving and perseverance in tough environments. All the participating teams and students have shown their caliber of talent and poise as they aim for careers in the flexo and package printing industry.
The Foundation is excited to announce the winners of this past weekend’s college flexo competition which was held online May 2, 2020 with great success. This year, due to our unique situation and truncated project parameters, teams were judged in four categories - Presentation, Research, Graphics, Concept and Execution. These scores are weighted and rolled up into an Overall Team Score for each team. Final results are as follows:
First Place – CalPoly – Caitlin Royston, Amber Huang, Ashley Chen, Julienne Chiang, Rita Yu, Morgan Wertz, Hannah Krieg and Trent Kammerer
Second Place – University of Wisconsin-Stout – Matthew Smith, Nikolas Thomas, Eli Dupslaff, Julia Otten and Molly Perkins
Third Place – Central Piedmont Community College – Sabrina Baez, Maddie Purser, Julie Goslin, Tucker Naumann, Jonathan Hall, Matt Gabriel and John Diamond
The winning team, CalPoly, will be featured during this year’s 2020 FTA Virtual Forum Online program where they will showcase their presentation and printed packaging during the session on May 6, 2020 titled “FQC: Exploring Technology & Defining Value in Packaging” – to be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Eastern
Regarding this year’s competition, Foundation Chairman Bettlyyn Krafft said, “I continue to be inspired, impressed and frankly just blown away by the college competition. The students take it up several notches every year. This year, with all the difficulties surrounding the pandemic, these students went even further above and beyond. This is why I do this, to help and watch these students thrive!!”
All the Phoenix Challenge student participants, though the support of the Foundation, can continue their education and do become productive participants at companies in our industry. From young career entries to long-standing professional leaders, the Phoenix Challenge Foundation has helped develop talent that now works with leading companies including: J. R. Cole Industries, Salem One, MacDermid Graphics Solutions, Harper Corporation, Quantum Ink Co., Tesa Tape, Anderson/Vreeland, Mark Andy, Inc., We Are Alexander and more.
In Memory of Raymond J. Prince

Industry veteran and Cal Poly Graphic Communication supporter Ray Prince passed away May 1, 2020.
Always a friend and supporter of education, Ray helped develop the resources and funded what is now called the Raymond J. Prince Graphic Arts Collection (RJPGAC) at Cal Poly. He arranged many donations of publications, raised substantial money, and was responsible for the donation of the entire Printing Industries of America Wadewitz Library to Cal Poly; now the largest graphic communication library in the world. The collection includes rare books, some dating back hundreds of years. These books are protected in the university’s Rare Book Collection, but accessible by students, faculty, and members of the industry for research. Hence, the students at Cal Poly are surrounded by knowledge at their fingertips as a result of Ray Prince.
We are eternally grateful for his support to our faculty, facilities, and students.

Cal Poly wins the grand prize award at TAGA 2019

The Cal Poly Technical Association of the Graphic Arts (TAGA) is a club within the Graphic Communication Department. TAGA offers a hands-on learning experience through its six month production sprint to compete in the student publication competition at the annual TAGA Conference.
Students Present Senior Showcase in Fall 2018

On Friday December 7th the Senior Showcase took place in the Graphic Communication building. The Fall quarter “Snowcase” involved twenty-four seniors of the major presenting their hard work from the past ten weeks in a reverse career fair setting. Each senior was able to work hands on with a project of their choice revolved around their concentration and major with enthusiasm and drive.
The Senior Showcase is a great opportunity for Graphic Communication senior students who are excited about real world work experiences to show off their dedication to being young, successful and soon-to-be college graduates! The seniors during the Showcase represented a good role model status for the younger GrC students who came to take a look, and as always the showcase is an open invitation to department professors, alumni, friends and families as well as the community.
GrC Hosts Second Annual PIASC Career Day

For the second year in a row the Printing Industry Association of Southern California put on a career day for printing companies from SoCal. Companies that were there included Classic Litho + Design, Dual Graphics, PIASC, PJ Printers, Superior Lithographics, Thoro Packaging, Trend Offset Printing and Westamerica Communications.
